P2188

System Too Rich at Idle Bank 1

Fuel & air metering Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P2188 means the ECM has found the air-fuel mixture on bank 1 is too rich (too much fuel) specifically at idle, and it has trimmed fuel as far as it can without correcting it. The extra fuel usually comes from a leaking injector, high fuel pressure, or a sensor misreading airflow. The car still runs, but rich running wastes fuel and can damage the plugs and catalytic converter if left unfixed.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Usually drivable — the engine may idle rough or smell of fuel, but prolonged rich running can foul plugs and harm the catalytic converter, so fix it soon.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Leaking or dripping fuel injector adding extra fuel at idle
  2. Excessive fuel pressure from a faulty regulator
  3. Faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor over-reporting incoming air
  4. Faulty front oxygen sensor skewing the fuel-trim feedback
  5. PCV or vacuum system fault richening the idle mixture
  6. Ignition misfire leaving unburned fuel the ECM reads as rich

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Check fuel pressure against spec and inspect for leaking or dripping injectors.
  2. Inspect and clean the MAF sensor and confirm its reading matches actual airflow at idle.
  3. Check the front (upstream) oxygen sensor response on a scan tool.
  4. Inspect the PCV valve, hoses, and vacuum lines for faults that richen idle.
  5. Check for exhaust leaks near the O2 sensor and for any active misfire, then clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P2188?+
Short-term yes, but a rich mixture wastes fuel, can foul the spark plugs, and overheats the catalytic converter over time. Repair it before long trips.
Can I just clear P2188?+
It clears, but the rich condition returns within a few drive cycles until the source of the extra fuel (or the sensor misreading air) is fixed.
