What it means

P0172 means the engine computer has detected that the air-fuel mixture on bank 1 is too rich — too much fuel for the air coming in. The engine may idle roughly, waste fuel, smell of gasoline and foul its spark plugs; over time the extra fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. The car will usually still drive.

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read live fuel-trim and O2 data to confirm a genuinely rich mixture before changing parts.
  2. Inspect injectors for leaks or poor spray; clean or replace as needed.
  3. Test fuel pressure and the pressure regulator for over-pressure.
  4. Clean or check the MAF sensor and inspect the air filter.
  5. Replace a slow upstream O2 sensor if data confirms it; leave the ECM for last.

Is it safe to drive with P0172?+
For short distances, usually — but a rich mixture washes oil off the cylinder walls, fouls plugs and can overheat the catalytic converter. Fix it before it damages the converter.
Can I just clear P0172?+
It will return once the ECM again sees the mixture running rich. The cause — injector, fuel pressure, MAF or O2 sensor — has to be corrected.
