P2314

Ignition Coil E Secondary Circuit

Ignition Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P2314 means the ECM has detected a fault in the secondary (high-voltage) circuit of ignition coil E — the side that delivers spark to the plug. This usually causes a misfire on that cylinder, with rough running and reduced power. Common causes are a failed coil, a worn spark plug or boot, or arcing in the secondary path.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Drivable but likely misfiring on one cylinder — avoid extended or hard driving, as a sustained misfire can damage the catalytic converter.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Failed ignition coil E
  2. Worn or cracked spark plug, boot, or plug wire on that cylinder
  3. Carbon tracking or arcing in the coil's secondary path
  4. Corroded or loose coil connector
  5. Excessive spark-plug gap or a fouled plug

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data and note any cylinder-specific misfire codes.
  2. Inspect the spark plug, boot, and (if fitted) plug wire on coil E's cylinder for wear, cracks, or carbon tracks.
  3. Swap coil E with a neighbouring coil and see whether the fault follows the coil.
  4. Check the spark plug gap and condition; replace if fouled or worn.
  5. Replace the coil if it fails testing; otherwise repair the secondary components. Clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P2314?+
Only briefly. A secondary-circuit fault means one cylinder may not be firing, and unburned fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Fix it soon, especially if the light is flashing.
Can I just clear P2314?+
It will return quickly if the coil, plug, or boot is faulty. Clearing it does not fix the misfire.
