P2317
Ignition Coil F Secondary Circuit
Ignition system
Generic OBD-II
Medium
What it means
P2317 means the ECM detected a fault in the secondary (high-voltage) circuit of ignition coil F β the side that fires the spark plug. A weak or failing secondary causes a misfire on that cylinder, giving rough running, lost power, and a lit or flashing check-engine light. The usual causes are a failed coil, a worn plug or cracked boot, or breakdown in the high-voltage path.
Medium
Can I keep driving? Driveable but not for long β a weak coil secondary means a misfiring cylinder, which can overheat and damage the catalytic converter.
Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on (may flash during an active misfire)
- Misfire, rough idle, or shaking
- Hesitation or reduced power on acceleration
- Reduced fuel economy
Common causes
Most likely first
- Failed ignition coil F (secondary/high-voltage side)Likely
- Worn spark plug or cracked plug boot on that cylinderCommon
- Carbon tracking or insulation breakdown at the coilCommon
- Damaged secondary wiring or a poor connectionLess often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Read freeze-frame and check for a companion misfire code (e.g. P0306) to confirm the cylinder.
- Inspect the spark plug and boot on coil F's cylinder for wear, cracks, or arcing.
- Swap coil F with a known-good coil and see if the fault follows the coil.
- Replace the coil if the secondary side has broken down; renew the plug if worn.
- Clear the code and re-test over a drive cycle.
FAQ
Quick answers
