P2264

Water in Fuel Sensor A Circuit

Fuel & air metering Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P2264 sets when the engine computer sees an electrical fault in the water-in-fuel sensor circuit, usually a sensor in a diesel fuel filter or water separator. The engine typically still runs normally, but the system that warns you of water in the fuel is not reporting correctly, which is worth fixing before water reaches the injection system.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Usually drivable, but the sensor that warns of water in the fuel is offline — get it checked before water can reach and damage injection parts.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at the water-in-fuel sensor
  2. Open or shorted wiring between the sensor and the module
  3. Failed water-in-fuel sensor (commonly in the fuel filter housing)
  4. Actual water accumulation in the fuel filter/separator
  5. Failed PCM/ECM (rare)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data, then inspect the sensor connector at the fuel filter/water separator for corrosion or moisture.
  2. Check the wiring and ground for opens, shorts, and chafing back to the module.
  3. Drain the fuel filter/water separator if a drain is fitted.
  4. Compare the sensor's signal to spec; replace the sensor if it is out of range.
  5. Clear the code and re-test; suspect the module only after wiring and sensor check out.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P2264?+
Short trips are usually fine, but the code means the sensor guarding against water in the fuel is not reporting. Water in diesel fuel can damage the injection system, so have it diagnosed soon.
Can I just clear P2264?+
You can, but it returns unless the wiring, connector, or sensor is repaired. Clearing it also hides a genuine water-in-fuel warning.
