What it means

P2196 means the upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 is reporting a rich mixture and won't swing lean the way it should. Either the sensor is biased and lazy, or the engine really is running rich from leaking injectors, high fuel pressure, or an exhaust leak near the sensor. It hurts fuel economy and emissions and can foul the catalytic converter if ignored.

  3. Verify fuel pressure and look for leaking injectors before condemning the sensor.
  4. If trims and pressure are normal but the sensor stays pinned rich, replace the upstream O2 sensor.
  5. Clear the code and confirm the sensor now switches normally on a road test.
