P0549

Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High Bank 2 Sensor 1

Exhaust / emissions Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P0549 means the ECM sees an abnormally high voltage on the bank 2, sensor 1 exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor circuit, which usually points to an open or short-to-power in the sensor or its wiring rather than a genuinely hot exhaust. The EGT sensor protects the turbo and exhaust after-treatment, so on some diesels this can limit power until it's fixed.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Usually driveable, but some turbo-diesel vehicles drop into reduced-power/limp mode to protect the exhaust after-treatment, so get it checked promptly.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Faulty exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor on bank 2, sensor 1
  2. Open circuit or short to voltage in the sensor wiring (a high reading usually points here)
  3. Corroded or loose sensor connector
  4. High resistance in the signal or ground wire
  5. Less commonly, a faulty ECM

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data to see when the fault set.
  2. Inspect the EGT sensor connector and wiring for opens, chafing, or a short to power.
  3. Measure the sensor's resistance and signal against the manufacturer's spec.
  4. Replace the EGT sensor if it is out of range.
  5. Repair any wiring faults, then clear the code and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P0549?+
Usually yes for short trips, but on turbo-diesels it can trigger reduced power to protect the DPF and turbo. Have it diagnosed soon.
Can I just clear P0549?+
You can, but it returns until the sensor or wiring fault is fixed. This is a monitoring sensor, so clearing it doesn't repair anything.
