P0363
Misfire Detected - Fueling Disabled
Ignition / misfire
Generic OBD-II
High
What it means
P0363 means the engine computer detected a misfire serious enough that it disabled fuel injection to the affected cylinder. It does this to keep unburnt fuel out of the exhaust, which would otherwise overheat and damage the catalytic converter. The cause is a genuine misfire β usually ignition, fuel, or compression β and it needs prompt repair.
High
Can I keep driving? Drive as little as possible β the misfire was severe enough that the computer shut off fuel to the affected cylinder to protect the catalytic converter.
Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on (often flashing during the misfire)
- Rough running, shaking, and a distinct dead-cylinder feel
- Noticeable loss of power and hesitation
- Increased fuel use and possible fuel smell
Common causes
Most likely first
- Worn spark plug or failing ignition coil on the affected cylinderLikely
- Clogged, leaking, or dead fuel injectorCommon
- Vacuum or intake leak causing a lean misfireCommon
- Low fuel pressureLess often
- Low compression (valve, ring, or head-gasket issue)Less often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Read freeze-frame and any cylinder-specific misfire codes to find the dead cylinder.
- Inspect and replace the spark plug and coil on that cylinder first β the most common cause.
- Check the injector and test for a vacuum leak around the intake.
- Verify fuel pressure and delivery.
- If it persists, run a compression test on the affected cylinder, then clear and re-test.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with P0363?+
No. The computer has already cut fuel to a cylinder to avoid dumping raw fuel into the converter. Continued driving risks overheating and destroying the catalytic converter.
Can I just clear P0363?+
It will return quickly. The underlying misfire has to be repaired before the computer restores normal fueling.
