P0247
Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate Actuator B
Turbo / boost control
Generic OBD-II
High
What it means
P0247 means the ECM has detected a fault in the "B" wastegate actuator or its control solenoid, the parts that regulate turbo or supercharger boost pressure. Without proper wastegate control, boost can run too low (weak, limp-mode performance) or too high (overboost), the latter of which can damage the turbocharger or engine if driven hard.
High
Can I keep driving? Drive gently and briefly β with boost control impaired the engine may fall into limp mode or, worse, overboost, which can damage the turbo or engine if pushed hard.
Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on
- Reduced power or limp mode
- Lack of boost, or overboost with surging
- Sluggish acceleration
- Possible drop in fuel economy
Common causes
Most likely first
- Failed wastegate actuator or its control solenoid (B)Likely
- Open, short, or corrosion in the wastegate control circuitCommon
- Leaking boost/vacuum hose or a torn actuator diaphragmCommon
- Seized or binding wastegate linkageLess often
- ECM output-driver fault (rare)Less often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Read freeze-frame data and check for related boost codes (P0243-P0246, or overboost/underboost P0234/P0299).
- Inspect the solenoid connector and wiring for opens, shorts, and corrosion.
- Test the solenoid's resistance and operation, and check the control hoses and wastegate movement.
- Replace the wastegate actuator or solenoid, or repair the wiring.
- Clear the code and verify boost is controlled under load.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with P0247?+
Only briefly and gently. Loss of wastegate control can allow overboost, which risks turbo and engine damage β or the car may limp with little power. Have it repaired promptly.
Can I just clear P0247?+
It returns as soon as the boost fault recurs. Repair the solenoid, actuator, or wiring instead of clearing it.
