What it means

P2281 means the PCM has detected unmetered air entering the engine between the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the throttle body — typically through a cracked intake boot, loose clamp, or leaking hose. Because that air bypasses the MAF, the mixture goes lean, causing rough idle, lean fuel trims, and hesitation. The engine still runs but may idle poorly or occasionally stall.
