P0964

Pressure Control Solenoid B Control Circuit/Open

Transmission Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P0964 means the transmission control module has detected an open (broken) electrical circuit to pressure control solenoid 'B', which regulates hydraulic pressure inside the automatic transmission. Without control of that pressure, the transmission can shift harshly, slip, or default to a limited limp mode to protect itself. The engine still starts and runs normally.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Usually drivable, but the transmission may shift harshly or drop into limp mode; avoid long trips until it's fixed to prevent added wear.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Open or high-resistance in the solenoid 'B' control wiring or connector
  2. Failed pressure control solenoid 'B'
  3. Loose or corroded connector at the transmission
  4. Damaged or chafed wiring in the solenoid circuit
  5. Faulty transmission control module (TCM)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data and check for other transmission codes to narrow the fault.
  2. Inspect the solenoid connector and wiring for open circuits, corrosion, or damage; repair as needed.
  3. Measure the solenoid resistance against spec; replace the pressure control solenoid if it's out of range or open.
  4. Confirm transmission fluid level and condition, as pressure faults can follow low or contaminated fluid.
  5. If wiring and solenoid test good, have the TCM diagnosed. Clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P0964?+
Short trips are usually fine, but harsh shifting or limp mode adds wear. Get it repaired soon and avoid heavy loads or long drives.
Can I just clear P0964?+
It will return until the open circuit or solenoid is fixed, since the TCM re-checks the pressure control circuit each drive.
