P06A8

Sensor Reference Voltage C Circuit Range/Performance

Sensor reference voltage Generic OBD-II High

What it means

P06A8 means the engine computer's "C" 5-volt reference supply β€” the steady voltage it sends to a group of sensors β€” is out of its expected range. Because several sensors share that reference, one bad supply can make many of them read incorrectly at once, so you'll often see multiple sensor codes and symptoms like rough running, hesitation, or limp mode. The usual cause is a shorted sensor or chafed wiring dragging the reference off value.

High

Can I keep driving? Often drivable but unpredictable β€” the 5-volt reference feeding several sensors is out of range, so the engine may run poorly, hesitate, or drop into limp mode.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. A shorted sensor pulling down the shared 5-volt reference
  2. Chafed or shorted reference wiring
  3. Corroded or loose connector on the reference circuit
  4. Faulty ECM/PCM (less common)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Scan for all stored codes and identify which sensors share reference voltage C.
  2. Unplug the sensors on that reference one at a time; if the voltage recovers, the last-disconnected sensor is the short.
  3. Inspect the reference wiring for chafing or shorts to ground or power.
  4. Check connectors for corrosion; suspect the ECM/PCM only after wiring and sensors test good. Clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P06A8?+
It's better not to rely on it. A bad reference voltage can make several sensors read wrong at once, causing poor running or limp mode. Diagnose it soon.
Can I just clear P06A8?+
It will come back while the reference stays out of range. The shorted sensor or wiring feeding that circuit has to be found and repaired.
