P0217
Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition
Engine cooling
Generic OBD-II
High
What it means
P0217 means the engine has exceeded its safe coolant temperature β it's overheating. This is one of the more urgent codes: continued driving can warp the cylinder head, fail the head gasket, or seize the engine. It usually traces to low coolant, a stuck thermostat, a failed water pump, or a fan that isn't running. Stop and let the engine cool, then diagnose before driving again.
High
Can I keep driving? No β the engine is overheating; keep driving and you risk a warped head or seized engine. Stop safely and let it cool.
Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- High-temperature warning light or gauge reading hot
- Check-engine light on
- Steam or coolant smell from under the hood
- Reduced power (protective mode) or the engine shutting down to prevent damage
Common causes
Most likely first
- Low coolant from a leak (hose, radiator, water pump, or head gasket)Likely
- Stuck-closed thermostat blocking coolant flowCommon
- Failed water pump not circulating coolantCommon
- Cooling fan not running (fan motor, relay, or control fault)Less often
- Clogged or damaged radiator, or air trapped in the systemLess often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Stop and let the engine cool before doing anything β never open a hot cooling system.
- With the engine cold, check the coolant level and look for obvious leaks and coolant on the ground.
- Verify the cooling fan runs when the engine is hot (or with the A/C on).
- Test the thermostat and water pump for proper coolant flow; check the radiator for clogging.
- Fix the root cause, refill and bleed the system, then confirm normal temperature before clearing the code.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with P0217?+
No. Driving an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head, blow the head gasket, or seize the engine. Pull over, let it cool, and fix the cause first.
Can I just clear P0217?+
Clearing it does nothing about the overheating and hides a dangerous condition. Find and fix why the engine got too hot before clearing.
