P0480

Fan 1 Control Circuit

Engine cooling Generic OBD-II High

What it means

P0480 means the ECM has detected a fault in the control circuit for cooling fan 1. The engine still runs, but if the fan won't turn on the engine can overheat in traffic or at idle, and the A/C may cool poorly when stopped. The usual causes are a failed fan relay, a bad fan motor, or wiring problems β€” start with the fuse and relay before condemning the motor.

High

Can I keep driving? Cautiously β€” the engine can run, but with the cooling fan not working it may overheat in traffic or at idle. Watch the temperature gauge and avoid stop-and-go driving.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Failed cooling fan relay or control module β€” common
  2. Faulty fan motor drawing wrong current
  3. Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring/connector in the fan control circuit
  4. Blown fan fuse or fusible link
  5. Faulty ECM fan-control output (rare)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data and note whether the fan is commanded but not running.
  2. Check the fan fuse and relay; swap in a known-good relay to test.
  3. Inspect the fan connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or a loose pin.
  4. Test the fan motor directly with power and ground to confirm it spins.
  5. Verify the ECM's control signal to the fan/relay; repair the confirmed fault, then clear and re-test while watching temperature.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P0480?+
Only carefully. On the highway airflow may keep temperatures down, but in traffic or at idle the engine can overheat. Get the fan working before relying on the car in slow traffic.
Can I just clear P0480?+
It returns once the fan circuit faults again, and clearing it doesn't restore cooling. Fix the relay, motor, or wiring so the fan runs.
