U0409
Invalid Data Received From Alternative Fuel Control Module
Communication network (alternative fuel)
Generic OBD-II
Medium
What it means
U0409 sets when a control module reads data from the alternative-fuel control module β used on CNG, LPG, or bi-fuel vehicles β that is missing or implausible. The usual effect is that the vehicle disables alternative-fuel mode or falls back to its primary fuel, so it generally still drives even with the code set.
Medium
Can I keep driving? Usually drivable β on bi-fuel vehicles the system may fall back to the primary fuel or disable alternative-fuel mode, but the vehicle generally still runs.
Common symptoms

- Vehicle won't switch to or hold alternative-fuel (CNG/LPG) mode

- Corroded, loose, or damaged connectors and data-bus wiringCommon
- Low or unstable battery and charging-system voltageCommon
- Software incompatibility after a module was replaced or updatedLess often
- An underlying fault in the alternative-fuel subsystem reported by the moduleLess often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Scan all modules and record stored codes and freeze-frame data before clearing.
- Check battery and charging voltage β low or noisy voltage is a common cause of bus faults.
- Inspect connectors and wiring to the alternative-fuel control module and along the data bus.
- If the module or ECM was recently replaced or flashed, confirm the software is compatible.
- Run the manufacturer's pinpoint tests on the alternative-fuel module; replace only if confirmed.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with U0409?+
Usually yes β most vehicles fall back to their primary fuel, so you can still drive, but the alternative-fuel system may be unavailable until it's fixed.

You can, but if the alternative-fuel module or its data link is still faulty the code returns and the system will keep defaulting to the primary fuel.
