P2635
Fuel Pump A Low Flow/Performance
Fuel delivery
Generic OBD-II
High
What it means
P2635 means the primary fuel pump 'A' is delivering less fuel flow or pressure than the PCM commanded. Because the engine depends on steady fuel delivery, this shows up as hard starting, hesitation, stalling under load, and β in severe cases β a no-start. The usual causes are a worn pump, a restricted filter or line, or a wiring/relay problem that starves the pump of voltage.
High
Can I keep driving? Limited β the pump is delivering less fuel than commanded, so expect hesitation, stalling, and possibly a no-start under load; drive as little as possible until fixed.
Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on
- Hard starting or long cranking
- Stalling, especially under acceleration or load
- Hesitation and loss of power at higher demand
- Engine cranks but won't start in severe cases
Common causes
Most likely first
- Worn or weak fuel pump (low output)Likely
- Clogged fuel filter or in-tank strainerCommon
- Restricted or kinked fuel supply lineCommon
- Faulty fuel pump relay, wiring, or low supply voltageLess often
- Failing pressure regulator / low system pressureLess often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Measure fuel pressure and, ideally, volume against the specification.
- Inspect the fuel filter and in-tank strainer for restriction.
- Check the pump relay, fuse, wiring, and the voltage reaching the pump.
- Inspect the supply line for kinks or blockage.
- Replace the pump if flow is low once supply and wiring check out, then clear and re-test.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with P2635?+
Not for long. Low fuel flow can cause stalling and hard starting, and the engine may quit under load or fail to restart. Have it repaired promptly.
Can I just clear P2635?+
It returns as soon as the pump again falls short of commanded flow. Fix the pump, filter, or wiring first, then clear and re-test.
