P2476

Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High Bank 2 Sensor 4

Exhaust / emissions Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P2476 means the exhaust-gas-temperature sensor at bank 2, sensor 4 is reporting an abnormally high (or open-circuit) signal. These sensors let the ECU protect the catalyst and manage particulate-filter regeneration, so the fault is a sensor or wiring problem — it does not stop the engine running.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Usually still drivable, but a bad exhaust-temperature signal can disable filter regeneration or trigger limp mode on some diesels — repair it before soot builds up.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Faulty exhaust-gas-temperature (EGT) sensor for bank 2, sensor 4
  2. Open or short-to-voltage in the EGT sensor wiring
  3. Corroded or loose sensor connector
  4. High resistance from heat-damaged wiring near the exhaust

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame and check the live EGT sensor value against the others for a stuck-high or open reading.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness near the exhaust for heat damage, corrosion, or a loose pin.
  3. Measure the signal and ground circuits for an open or short to voltage.
  4. Compare sensor resistance to spec; replace the EGT sensor if out of range.
  5. Clear the code and confirm the reading returns to normal after a drive.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P2476?+
Short term usually yes, but on many diesels a faulty EGT signal blocks DPF regeneration, so the filter slowly clogs. Fix it before that turns into a restriction code.
Can I just clear P2476?+
It comes back as soon as the ECU sees the same high or open signal. The sensor or its wiring needs repair first.
