P2269
Water in Fuel Condition - Sensor A
Fuel system (diesel)
Generic OBD-II
High
What it means
P2269 means the water-in-fuel (WIF) sensor β usually mounted in the fuel filter or water separator on a diesel β has detected water in the fuel above the allowed level. Water doesn't lubricate like diesel and can corrode and damage the high-pressure injection pump and injectors, so it matters. The dash usually shows a "water in fuel" warning alongside the code.
High
Can I keep driving? Limited β drain the water separator promptly. Running with water in the fuel can cause rough running, hard starting, and expensive damage to the injection pump and injectors.
Common symptoms
What you'll notice

How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Drain the fuel/water separator using its drain valve, then recheck.
- If water keeps returning, suspect contaminated fuel and drain or replace the fuel filter.
- Test the water-in-fuel sensor and its wiring/connector for shorts or opens.
- Replace the WIF sensor if it reports water when the separator is dry.
- Clear the code and confirm it stays off over a few drive cycles.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with P2269?+
Not for long. Drain the water separator as soon as possible β water in diesel fuel can damage the injection pump and injectors and cause running problems.
Can I just clear P2269?+
Clearing it without removing the water won't help; it returns as soon as the sensor sees water again. Drain the water first.
