P0169
Incorrect Fuel Composition
Fuel & air metering
Generic OBD-II
High
What it means
P0169 means the fuel composition (flex-fuel) sensor reports that the fuel in the tank doesn't match what the ECM expects — for example an ethanol blend outside the programmed range, or a faulty sensor reading. Because the ECM sets fueling and spark from this value, a mismatch can cause rough running, hard starting, and reduced power until the fuel or sensor is corrected.
High
Can I keep driving? Drive gently and get it checked — the engine may run rough or be hard to start if the fuel blend doesn't match what the ECM expects.
Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on
- Rough running or hesitation
- Hard starting, especially in cold weather
- Reduced power and higher fuel consumption
Common causes
Most likely first
- Faulty fuel composition (flex-fuel) sensorLikely
- Fuel blend that doesn't match what the sensor/ECM expects (e.g. wrong ethanol ratio)Common
- Wiring open or shorted in the fuel composition sensor circuitCommon
- Corroded or loose electrical connector at the sensorLess often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Confirm the fuel in the tank is a blend the vehicle is rated for and refill correctly if in doubt.
- Read the live ethanol/fuel-composition value and compare it to the actual fuel.
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for opens, shorts, or corrosion.
- Test the fuel composition sensor per the service data and replace it if out of range.
- Clear the code and re-test after a fill of known-correct fuel.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with P0169?+
Short, gentle trips are usually okay, but the engine may run rough or start hard because fueling is based on the wrong fuel blend. Have it diagnosed promptly.
Can I just clear P0169?+
It returns if the sensor still reports a mismatch. Verify the fuel is correct and repair the sensor or wiring before clearing.
