P2162

Vehicle Speed Sensor A/B Correlation

Vehicle speed / idle control Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P2162 sets when the PCM compares two vehicle-speed signals ("A" and "B") and finds they don't agree. The computer uses speed data for the speedometer, transmission shifting, cruise control, and stability systems, so a mismatch mainly affects those features rather than how the engine runs. The usual causes are a failing speed sensor, wiring or connector problems, or a damaged tone ring β€” not anything that stops the car from driving.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Drivable β€” the engine runs normally, but the speedometer, cruise control, and shift quality may misbehave, so fix it before relying on those.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Faulty vehicle speed sensor (A or B)
  2. Open, shorted, or high-resistance sensor wiring
  3. Poor or corroded connection at a speed-sensor connector
  4. Damaged reluctor/tone ring the sensor reads
  5. Fault in the ABS wheel-speed input feeding the signal
  6. Faulty PCM (least likely)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data and scan for related speed-sensor and ABS codes.
  2. Compare the live data from speed sensors A and B β€” the code sets when the two disagree.
  3. Inspect both sensor connectors and wiring for opens, shorts, and corrosion.
  4. Check the reluctor/tone ring for damage, debris, or a loose fit.
  5. Replace the sensor that reads incorrectly; repair wiring as needed, then clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P2162?+
The engine runs fine, but an unreliable speed signal can disable cruise control and cause odd shifting or an ABS light. It's drivable, but get it fixed before long trips.
Can I just clear P2162?+
It returns once the two sensors disagree again. You need to find which sensor or wire is wrong rather than just clearing it.
