P0824

Gear Lever Y Position Sensor 1 Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

Transmission Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P0824 means the signal from the gear-lever Y position sensor is intermittent or erratic. This sensor reports the shift-lever position on a gated or manual-mode selector; when its signal drops out, the module briefly misreads the selected gear or loses manual-shift function. It won't cause a no-start; the car generally still drives in automatic mode, but the goal is to find the intermittent sensor or wiring fault before it becomes constant.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Shifting may occasionally read the wrong gear or lose manual-shift function; usually drivable in automatic mode, but have it checked.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Intermittent fault in the gear-lever Y position sensor
  2. Intermittent wiring or connector fault in the sensor circuit
  3. Loose or corroded connectors in the transmission system
  4. Gear-lever mechanism issue
  5. Transmission control module (TCM) fault

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data to capture the conditions when it set.
  2. Wiggle-test the sensor wiring and connector to reproduce the dropout.
  3. Test the sensor signal across the full travel of the shift lever.
  4. Secure and clean any loose or corroded connectors.
  5. Inspect the gear-lever mechanism; replace the sensor if faulty. Clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P0824?+
Usually yes, in automatic mode. Because the fault is intermittent, the wrong-gear reading or lost manual shifting is occasional. Repair it before it becomes constant and confuses gear selection.
Can I just clear P0824?+
It returns when the circuit drops out again. Trace and repair the intermittent sensor wiring, connector, or the sensor itself.
