What it means
P0542 means the ECM has detected an abnormally high voltage on the intake air heater "A" control circuit. The intake air heater warms incoming air to help cold starting (mainly on diesels). The engine still runs, and in warm weather you may notice nothing, but a faulty heater circuit can make cold starts harder and rougher, so it's worth repairing before winter.
