P0341

Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1 or Single Sensor

Ignition / cam & crank Generic OBD-II High

What it means

P0341 means the camshaft position sensor's signal is present but doesn't line up with what the ECM expects relative to the crankshaft. The engine uses this signal to time fuel and spark, so a mistimed or erratic reading — from a failing sensor, a damaged tone wheel, or even stretched timing — can cause hard starting, stalling, and rough running.

High

Can I keep driving? May run rough, stall, or be hard to start, and can occasionally fail to start; drive cautiously and fix soon.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Faulty camshaft position sensor giving an implausible or mistimed signal
  2. Damaged reluctor/tone wheel or debris on the sensor tip
  3. Damaged or shorted wiring in the sensor circuit
  4. Stretched timing chain or jumped timing causing cam-to-crank correlation to drift
  5. Loose connector, or a failed ECM (rare)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data and check for crank-sensor or timing-correlation codes (e.g. P0016).
  2. Inspect the cam sensor connector and wiring for damage or corrosion.
  3. Check the sensor tip and reluctor wheel for metal debris or damage.
  4. Compare cam and crank signals; if correlation is off, inspect timing chain/belt and tensioner.
  5. Replace the camshaft position sensor if the signal is out of range. Clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P0341?+
Drive cautiously. The engine can stall or become hard to start, and a timing-related cause could worsen. Get it diagnosed before relying on the vehicle.
Can I just clear P0341?+
It will return once the ECM again sees the cam signal mistimed. Repair the sensor, wiring, or timing issue first, then clear and re-test.
