P0324
Knock/Combustion Vibration Control System Error
Ignition / knock control
Generic OBD-II
Medium
What it means
P0324 means the knock-control system detected an internal fault and can no longer reliably monitor engine knock. Because the ECM relies on the knock sensor to fine-tune ignition timing, it usually retards timing as a safeguard β costing a little power and economy β until the sensor, wiring, or a real knock source is found and corrected.
Medium
Can I keep driving? Usually driveable, but the ECM may retard ignition timing as a precaution, slightly reducing power and economy; avoid heavy loads until fixed.
Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on
- Slightly reduced power or economy from precautionary timing retard
- Audible pinging or knocking under load or acceleration
- Rough running in some cases
Common causes
Most likely first
- Faulty knock sensor giving an implausible signal to the control systemLikely
- Damaged or corroded wiring in the knock sensor circuitCommon
- Actual engine knock from low-octane fuel or carbon depositsCommon
- Poor sensor mounting or torque affecting its readingLess often
- Failed ECM (rare)Less often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Read freeze-frame data and check for companion knock-sensor codes (P0325βP0334).
- Inspect the knock sensor wiring and connector for damage or corrosion.
- Confirm the sensor is mounted and torqued correctly β a loose sensor reads wrong.
- Try a tank of the manufacturer-recommended octane if pinging is present.
- Test the sensor's resistance/signal and replace if out of spec. Clear and re-test.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with P0324?+
Short-term, yes. The ECM retards timing to protect the engine, so you lose a little power and economy. Address it before sustained hard driving to avoid knock damage.
Can I just clear P0324?+
It returns if the control system still sees a fault. Fix the sensor, wiring, or knock source first, then clear and re-test.
