P020F

Cylinder 6 Injection Timing

Injector / injection timing Generic OBD-II High

What it means

P020F means the ECM has detected that the fuel injection timing for cylinder 6 is incorrect β€” fuel isn't being injected at the right moment for that cylinder. It's most common on direct-injection and diesel engines and usually traces to the injector itself, its wiring, or fuel-pressure and timing-reference problems. The result is rough running and reduced power from cylinder 6; a hard misfire can harm the catalytic converter, so it's worth prompt diagnosis.

High

Can I keep driving? Drivable but not ideal β€” cylinder 6 combustion is off, so expect rough running and reduced power; a hard misfire can harm the catalyst, so address it soon.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Faulty or worn fuel injector on cylinder 6
  2. Injector wiring or connector fault affecting timing
  3. Low or erratic fuel-rail pressure
  4. Crankshaft/camshaft position sensor fault skewing the timing reference
  5. Failed ECM/PCM (rare)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read injector balance/correction and fuel-rail pressure data in live view to see how far cylinder 6 is off.
  2. Test fuel-rail pressure against spec β€” low or unstable pressure upsets injection timing.
  3. Inspect the cylinder 6 injector connector and wiring for damage or corrosion.
  4. Check the crank and cam position sensor signals for dropouts.
  5. Test or replace the injector as needed, then clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P020F?+
Short-term only. Off injection timing on cylinder 6 causes rough running and, if it becomes a hard misfire, can damage the catalytic converter. Get it diagnosed before extended driving.
Can I just clear P020F?+
It returns once the ECM detects the timing error again. The injector, fuel pressure, or timing-reference fault behind it has to be repaired.
