P004E

Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Control A Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

Turbo / boost control Generic OBD-II High

What it means

P004E means the ECM sees an intermittent or erratic signal in the electrical control circuit for the turbocharger's boost-control actuator. Because the fault comes and goes, it usually traces to a loose connector, chafed wiring, or a marginal solenoid rather than a hard short. Boost can drop in and out, and the engine may briefly enter reduced-power mode until the connection is repaired.

High

Can I keep driving? Drivable but degraded β€” boost can drop in and out and the engine may enter reduced-power mode. Fix it soon; intermittent faults tend to worsen into steady failures.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Loose or corroded connector at the boost-control solenoid or actuator
  2. Chafed, broken, or intermittently shorting wiring in the control circuit
  3. Faulty boost-control solenoid or electronic actuator
  4. Poor ground or intermittent power supply to the circuit
  5. Failed engine control module driver (rare)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Scan and read freeze-frame data to capture the conditions when the fault appears.
  2. Wiggle-test the boost-control connector and harness while watching live data for dropouts.
  3. Inspect the solenoid/actuator connector for corrosion, backed-out pins, or looseness.
  4. Measure the solenoid resistance and check continuity of the control wiring.
  5. Repair the intermittent wiring or connector; replace the solenoid or actuator if it tests faulty.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P004E?+
For short trips, usually β€” but boost may cut out unexpectedly and the engine can drop into limp mode. Have the wiring and boost-control circuit checked soon.
Can I just clear P004E?+
An intermittent fault will return when the connection acts up again. The loose or chafed wiring, or the solenoid, needs to be found and fixed.
