P2856
Clutch B Pressure Charge Performance
Transmission (clutch hydraulics)
Generic OBD-II
High
What it means
P2856 means clutch 'B' isn't building or holding hydraulic apply pressure the way the controller expects during its charge (fill) phase. On clutch-to-clutch automatics and dual-clutch transmissions this clutch must fill quickly and firmly; if it can't, the clutch slips, shifts flare, and the friction material overheats. This is a shift-quality and durability problem that tends to get worse.
High
Can I keep driving? Not for long β a clutch that won't charge pressure slips and overheats; drive as little as possible and get it diagnosed to avoid transmission damage.
Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Slipping or flaring during shifts (rpm rises without acceleration)
- Harsh or delayed engagement
- Transmission enters limp/reduced-function mode
- Check-engine light on, sometimes with a burnt-fluid smell
Common causes
Most likely first
- Worn clutch B friction platesLikely
- Faulty pressure-control solenoid feeding clutch BCommon
- Internal hydraulic leak or stuck valve in the valve bodyCommon
- Low or degraded transmission fluidLess often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Check fluid level, condition, and smell first; correct with the exact specified fluid.
- Review live line-pressure and clutch apply data and scan for companion solenoid codes.
- Test the pressure-control solenoid and valve body for the clutch B circuit.
- If the clutch is worn or the circuit leaks internally, the valve body or transmission needs service; clear and re-test after repair.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with P2856?+
No β a slipping clutch quickly overheats and can destroy the transmission. Minimize driving and get it repaired.
Can I just clear P2856?+
Clearing won't fix slipping. The clutch or hydraulic fault must be repaired or the code and damage return.
