P2453

Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

Diesel particulate filter (emissions) Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P2453 means the diesel particulate filter (DPF) differential pressure sensor is sending a reading outside its normal range. The ECM uses that pressure difference to judge how full the filter is and when to run a regeneration. A bad signal β€” from a failed sensor, clogged sense hoses, or a genuinely restricted filter β€” can leave regeneration mismanaged, so the car may drive fine at first but risk a clogged DPF and limp mode.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Usually driveable β€” but the ECM can't manage DPF regeneration properly, risking a clogged filter and limp mode, so fix it soon.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Faulty particulate filter differential pressure sensor
  2. Clogged, kinked, or disconnected pressure sense hoses
  3. Damaged wiring or a poor connector at the sensor
  4. A genuinely restricted (soot-loaded) or damaged particulate filter
  5. Faulty ECM (rare)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame and compare the sensor's pressure reading against expected values.
  2. Inspect both pressure sense hoses for soot clogging, kinks, or leaks β€” a common cause.
  3. Check the sensor connector and wiring for damage or corrosion.
  4. Replace the differential pressure sensor if its signal is out of range.
  5. Assess the DPF for real restriction if the sensor and hoses are good; clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P2453?+
Short term, usually yes, but the ECM can't manage regeneration reliably, so the filter can clog and trigger limp mode. Fix it soon.
Can I just clear P2453?+
You can, but it returns until the pressure sensor, its hoses, or the filter restriction is resolved.
