P2140

Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch E/F Voltage Correlation

Throttle / pedal position Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P2140 sets when the two throttle/accelerator-pedal position signals ('E' and 'F') that should agree read differently enough that the ECM can't trust them. Because the module can't confirm pedal position, it usually drops into a reduced-power fail-safe mode until the disagreeing sensor or its wiring is repaired.

Medium

Can I keep driving? The car usually runs but commonly drops into reduced-power limp mode because the ECM can't trust the pedal signal; drive gently and get it checked soon.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Faulty throttle/pedal position sensor ('E' or 'F' element)
  2. Open, shorted, or chafed wiring causing one signal to drift
  3. Poor or corroded sensor connector
  4. Dirty or carbon-filled throttle bore skewing a reading
  5. Faulty ECM (rare)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Scan live data and compare the E and F signals — they should track together across pedal/throttle travel.
  2. Inspect the connectors and wiring for both circuits for damage or corrosion.
  3. Confirm a steady 5-volt reference and good ground at the sensor.
  4. Clean the throttle bore if carbon is affecting readings.
  5. Replace the position sensor if the two elements won't correlate; retest before replacing the ECM.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P2140?+
It usually still moves, but with the two signals disagreeing the ECM often limits power. Keep speeds low and get it diagnosed promptly.
Can I just clear P2140?+
It returns as soon as the sensor signals disagree again; the faulty element or wiring has to be repaired for it to stay off.
