P0852
Park/Neutral Switch Input Circuit High
Transmission / range switch
Generic OBD-II
Medium
What it means
P0852 means the module reads a high-voltage signal on the park/neutral (range) switch input, so it cannot reliably tell whether the transmission is in Park or Neutral. Because this switch feeds the starter interlock, the engine may refuse to crank in Park/Neutral β or, if the fault is the other way, crank while in gear. Fix it promptly for both drivability and safety.
Medium
Can I keep driving? The engine may fail to start (no-crank in Park/Neutral) or, worse, crank in gear β treat the starting behaviour as a safety concern and fix it promptly.

How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Read freeze-frame data and confirm the switch state versus the actual gear on a scan tool.
- Inspect and, if adjustable, re-align the park/neutral switch to the shift lever.
- Check the switch connector and wiring for opens or shorts-to-power.
- Replace the range/neutral switch if it does not report Park/Neutral correctly. Clear and re-test.
FAQ
Quick answers
Is it safe to drive with P0852?+
Be cautious β a bad neutral-safety input can prevent starting or let the starter engage in gear. Have it fixed before relying on the vehicle.
Can I just clear P0852?+
It returns until the switch or wiring is corrected, and clearing does not restore the safety interlock.
