P074E

Unable To Engage Gear 6

Transmission Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P074E means the transmission control module commanded a shift into 6th gear but the transmission couldn't achieve it. Top gear normally lowers engine rpm for economical highway cruising; when it can't engage, the car stays in a lower gear and the engine runs faster than it should. Common roots are low or worn fluid, a faulty shift solenoid, or worn clutches for that gear. It doesn't cause a no-start.

Medium

Can I keep driving? You can still drive, but the transmission won't reach top (6th) gear, so highway rpm and fuel use climb and the engine works harder β€” avoid sustained high-speed driving until it's fixed.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Low or degraded transmission fluid
  2. Faulty shift or pressure-control solenoid for the 6th-gear apply
  3. Worn clutch pack or friction element used for 6th gear
  4. Valve body fault sticking or misrouting pressure
  5. Transmission control module (TCM) fault

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data and scan for companion solenoid or ratio codes to narrow it down.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition; service if low or degraded.
  3. Command and test the shift/pressure solenoids for the top-gear apply.
  4. Inspect the valve body for sticking valves or debris.
  5. If the apply components are worn, internal transmission repair is needed. Clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P074E?+
For short trips, yes β€” the car still moves in the lower gears. But without 6th gear the engine revs high at highway speed, so keep speeds moderate and get it repaired soon.
Can I just clear P074E?+
It will come back the next time the transmission tries and fails to reach 6th gear. The underlying fluid, solenoid, or clutch problem has to be fixed.
