P0121

Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance

Throttle / air metering Generic OBD-II High

What it means

P0121 means the throttle (or accelerator pedal) position sensor "A" signal doesn't match what the ECM expects for the current conditions β€” it's in range but not tracking correctly. Because throttle position drives fueling and power, the car often falls into a reduced-power limp mode with hesitation or an unsteady idle. A worn sensor or a carbon-fouled throttle body is the usual cause; check the wiring and the live reading before replacing parts.

High

Can I keep driving? Limited β€” the car often drops into a reduced-power limp mode with sluggish or erratic throttle response; drive gently and get it checked soon.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Worn or faulty throttle position sensor (or its section of the throttle body) β€” most common
  2. Carbon-fouled or sticking throttle plate skewing the reading
  3. Damaged, corroded, or loose connector/wiring in the sensor circuit
  4. Poor sensor ground or reference-voltage fault
  5. Faulty ECM (rare)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame and live data; watch the throttle position reading sweep smoothly as the pedal moves β€” jumps or flat spots point to the sensor.
  2. Inspect the throttle-body/sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or a loose pin.
  3. Clean a carboned throttle plate/body if it's sticking (follow the relearn procedure afterward).
  4. Check sensor reference voltage and ground against spec.
  5. If the signal is erratic and wiring is good, replace the throttle position sensor or throttle body. Clear and road-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P0121?+
Limp mode makes the car slow and the throttle unpredictable, which is unsafe in traffic. Drive gently and get it diagnosed promptly.
Can I just clear P0121?+
It returns once the ECM sees the throttle signal out of range again. The sensor, throttle body, or wiring needs attention.
